The total capacity of the cultural center will exceed 1,000 people. The aim is for the main stage to be used for many and diverse types of events, from opera and concerts to graduation ceremonies and conferences.
The Art & Design Center, which will also house the Museum of People, and designed by one of the world’s leading architectural firms, Foster + Partners, is the most important project included in Larnaka’s bid to become the European Capital of Culture 2030.
This is a significant infrastructure project that the Larnaka Municipality has already put on a course for planning and financing, in cooperation with the “Larnaka 2030” organization, which managed the city’s successful candidacy for the European Capital of Culture title. The center is planned as a multi-storey, state-of-the-art cultural hub, to be built next to the existing American University of Cyprus, along the Larnaka-Dhekelia coastal road, near the circular junction to Livadia.
The site for the cultural center is part of the larger ambitious “Larnaca – Land of Tomorrow” project, on the former oil tanks area. The Petrolina Group has contributed a 4,000 m² seaside plot for the project. The preliminary estimated cost is around €30 million. In essence, the project is intended to become the “home” of the Larnaka 2030 organization.
The municipal authorities aim for this space to become a landmark both for the future development of the area, which for decades remained neglected due to the presence of the oil tanks, and for the cultural life of the city.
